Good and Evil

What makes a person good or bad?  Again, my opinion, it stems from their heart.  Yes, it is also how we're wired in our brains and genetics, but I'm not trying to be medical or scientific.  I have a hard enough time understanding keeping it simple. So, for the sake of this read, let's just all be on the same page of leaving neurological and chemical make up for those far more educated than me.

Why am I writing this?  It's because I stumbled on the word evil, and it's definition:

Evil: /e-vil/ adjective -- profoundly immoral and malevolent.

For me, the definition of evil describes addiction.  Substance abuse causes good people to act profoundly immoral and show malevolence toward others and, foremost, themselves.

So, does the fact that someone is an addict make them bad person?  No. It does not.  Are all people good?  No. They are not.  You don't have to be an addict to be a bad person.  On the flip side, you don't have to be clean or recovered to be a good person.  Of course, just my personal opinion, and like most of you reading, we've had had dealings with all types.

From the addicts I've known (and loved), honestly, they are some of the truly best, most kind souls.  They are loyal to a fault, and will bend over backwards to help those in need.  Addicts feel so deeply they easily lose touch with reality.  People they once cared for quickly become shadows; and the tormented souls of other addicts, well, they become their light.  Drugs and alcohol take good souls shoving them deep into the evil that is addiction.

Still, the good is there.  It battles constantly to overcome the evil.  If only life was a fairy tale, where good always over comes evil.  It's not, so we fight.  We stop making the addictions of our loved ones and bring the light back to the dark to overcome the shadows of evil with good.

Let's all keep on talking about; reaching out; including others; education ourselves; and dedicating time to stop this evil.
