NO HUMAN IS IMMUNE TO ADDICTION

My son, Matthew, is a recovering Meth addict. He was a normal kid from a normal middle class family. Right after high school he went into nursing; went to school and, then, got jobs at hospitals and nursing facilities. He lived at home with us, but I knew he was into things he shouldn’t be. Soon, I was told he was doing Meth.

He wouldn’t come home for days at a time. I worried and worried always waiting on a phone call saying he was dead. I was at the end of my rope. One night laying in bed I just started praying. I ask God to take control, that this addiction was way bigger than anything that I as a Mother could fix. I begged God to spare my son’s life, but I would accept His will as to what ever it was to stop this torment for my son and our family. Two days later my son was arrested for possession of cursers to meth. He had never been in trouble before so he was released on bond. The money that was put up to get him out was his money.

Thank God that our area of Virginia has a program that offers theses addicts a chance to get clean. It’s a group house rehab. Very strict. No caffeine - no tobacco - not even sugar! Thirty-day program with everyday group and individual classes. They even have programs for the enablers (that would be people like us parents.) I couldn’t accept that I was an enabler for a long time. Enabling doesn’t always mean giving money or paying bonds — it’s accepting the unacceptable. When I gave my son back to God who had given him to me, it was the hardest thing I had ever done. I was done accepting the unacceptable. I thank God daily for sparing my son’s life.

Today, my son is involved with helping others that are on the same road he has been down. He is respected highly by so many that are fortunate enough to have this big-hearted, sweetheart as their friend and supporter. I’m so proud of him and thankful that he continues to fight this demon of addiction and is determined to win!! He just celebrated his 5th year clean April 28th 2019.

Stay strong. Don’t give up. A miracle is coming.
